What Is Meditation?
It is both simple and profound: it is nothing more than training your mind to focus on one thing at a time; it is nothing less than opening your soul to deeper exploration.
There are numerous ways to mediate; all have value and can produce transformative results. Here are just a few:
• alone or in a group
• silently or through chanting or singing
• sitting, lying down or dancing
• with your eyes shut or open
• indoors or outside
• listening to a guided meditation
• focused on words or a mantra
• focused on a vista or other image
• staring at a candle flame or fire
• holding something from nature or some other focal object
• with your pet beside you
• while watching a special meditation video
I think that list will help you release any preconceived and/or limiting ideas you may have had about meditating.
My ideas about meditation may be considered somewhat unorthodox, but I think many people have been turned off from pursuing it because they think it’s too difficult, time-consuming or boring. Others mistakenly believe they must follow strict rules, have a guru or sit in some strange, uncomfortable position. None of this has been true for me. Though I did study for a time with a guru, I took away what I needed to learn and continued to expand my practice in my own way.
I believe meditation can be fun, feel fantastic and break all the old rules. You are the only one inside your head, so you’re the only one who can evaluate how your meditations feel to you. How you meditate is entirely your choice. If you are arriving at this threshold of experience from highly structured religious teachings, you may feel great freedom in designing your own meditation program.
