Wildly Cool June afternoon

Wind rises quickly, churning the Strait into a wild scene of endless waves, crashing in white froth all across the dark teal water. Looking vulnerable, the long narrow finger of Violet Point shimmers in a spotlight of sun. Across Discovery Bay, a rainbow hangs over Quimper Peninsula, tantalizing. Then a sheet of lightning glitters above the water, while thunder roars and tumbles down the Olympic Mountains as if hurled by Zeus himself. Crows are silenced and tuck themselves safely into huge douglas firs.

Crow Kin?

Across from the bench where my dog and I rest midway in our daily walk, a boisterous crow struts along a roof ridge voicing her opinions like some street corner protestor. She squawks about the quality of seeds found in this gutter, the warmth of the dark asphalt shingles beneath her feet—and maybe her lack of a mate? Unlike most crows around here, she seems to lack chums. Perhaps because no other crow can get a caw in edgewise?
